Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine
Chinese Medicine includes the techniques of acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage, acupressure and nutrition. Coming from a 3,000-year-old medical theory, it treats a wide range of health concerns from musculoskeletal to internal imbalances.
An in-depth diagnostic process is used which includes a thorough health history, tongue and pulse reading, as well abdominal palpation and observation of skin tone and voice quality. From this your practitioner will develop a treatment strategy that includes which acupuncture points will be used, as well as appropriate herbal medicine, nutritional suggestions and lifestyle modifications.
Acupuncture points are chosen according to the function they provide in treatment. They may or may not be chosen in the area of the condition being treated. Acupuncture needles are fine sterile needles. They are only used once and then disposed of. They are solid and inserted very superficially into the acupuncture points, which reside on meridians in the body to balance your energy flow. They are rarely painful. Most people find the experience to be very relaxing.
Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can be used for wellness support in the body as well as to treat many illnesses and acute health conditions. Many people are finding great improvement in their health with this medicine as it considers all aspects of the individual and treats the root of disease not just symptoms. This medicine enhances the body's healing process and can be used to treat the side effects of western medical treatment or to support treatment involving western medicine. This highly individualized and holistic form of medicine is valuable in the treatment and prevention of a wide range of health concerns.
Acupuncture is recognized by the National Instititute of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to be effective in a wide variety of medical problems.
Chinese Herbal Medicine
Herbal medicine is one of the oldest forms of healthcare, used by virtually every culture in the world. Traditional Chinese Medicine uses herb formulas along with acupuncture (or alone) to synergistically treat the whole body. Chinese herbal formulas usually contain 6-20 herbs that are tailored specifically to the individual and the illness pattern that is being treated. Often the formula is changed frequently to reflect the healing changes the body is going through. Herbal medicines are best taken as a tea that is mixed specifically for the patient. Many can also be administered in pill form. We will work with you to determine which method is best for you.
To prescribe the best herbal formula for you, our trained herbalists will use pulse, tongue, abdominal palpation and history to formulate herbs that will treat the root cause of your health concern. Chinese herbal medicine treats the whole body and not just symptoms.
Cupping
Cupping is a method of stimulating Acupuncture points by applying suction through a glass “cup” in which a partial vacuum has been created. This technique produces blood congestion at the site and stimulates it. This technique is used for breaking up fluid and phlegm stagnation in the lungs, (coughs, bronchitis and pneumonia) as well as for soft tissue congestion(low back ache, neck and shoulder pain.)
Moxa
Moxibustion is used to provide a deep penetrating heat to the acupuncture points to open obstruction, expel cold and warm the meridians to stimulate the flow of qi and blood.
